What exactly is an all-inclusive?

This is a question we are asked frequently. A standard hotel or EP (European Plan) is one in which only the accommodation is included in the rate. All other charges for meals and entertainment are additional.

Generally, an all-inclusive resort includes in its rate accommodations, meals, snacks, drinks (non-alcohol and alcoholic), non-motorized water sports, activities, entertainment and taxes. According to the resort and the area additional acivities and facilities may be included. An all-inclusive is ually in a resort area such as the Caribbean and Mexico and the items included vary from place to place. Always be certain to ask exactly what is and is not included.

All-inclusive packages are an excellent way to control costs. Because most items are included in one price, budgeting is much easier especially if going to an unfamiliar area. Knowing the majority of costs before you begin your vacation gives most travelers great peace of mind.

Choosing the right resort for you requires some thought and planning. The most frequent question we are asked is what determines the price difference in all-inclusive resorts. Many factors determine the cost. Things to consider are:

What are the accommodations and facilities? Is the resort on the beach? Is this important to you?
What is the resort's rating? Ratings are based on locations, facilities, amenities, service, etc.
What are the dining options? Less expensive all-inclusives serve most if not all meals buffet style. It is not the quantity of food; it is the number of choices you have. If you are staying in a resort several days, you might tire of buffet meals and choosing a resort with ala Carte restaurant choices may be a better choice for you.
What kinds of liquor are served? Again, less expensive all-inclusives serve fewer choices in liquor, beer and wine. They may only serve domestic alcohol. More luxurious resorts serve premium liquor and mixed drinks.
What are the amenities? Does the room have a refrigerator, mini-bar, hair dryer, etc.? Are these things important to you?
What are the activities? Activities can mean organized group activities by the pool, beach volleyball, children's supervised activities or crafts. These factors will vary in importance according to the age and activity level of your traveling party. Non-motorized water sports generally mean things to play with in the water such as boogie boards, wind-surfers, kayaks, water-trikes, etc. Again, each resort differs in what they provide.
What is the entertainment? Some sort of evening entertainment is usually included. This too differs with the resort. It can range from local performers to full stage productions. Generally, you can expect at least a disco with recorded music for dancing as well as additional options.
